Database: Pennsylvania 1910 Census Miracode Index

Description:
This database is an index to the 1910 US Federal Census for the state of Pennsylvania. It is searchable by the heads of households. The 1910 Miracode indexes record the following information for each person: name, relationship to head of household, color or race, age at last birthday, marital status, visitation number or family number, place of birth, county, township, and enumeration district number. The information found here will lead researchers to the location of their family in the actual 1910 US Federal Census Schedules.

The corresponding census images for this database will be posted within the next few months. The Miracode indexes for other states will be following in the upcoming weeks.

Extended Description:
Miracode is a slightly modified version of the Soundex indexing format. Miracode and Soundex are indexes based on the pronunciation of a name, rather than the name's spelling. Surnames are coded and then arranged numerically by their codes. Miracode was employed only in 1910 and for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. For more information, see the following article in Ancestry's reference library: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/2253.asp

As with any census index, not everyone enumerated on the 1910 census schedules is on the Miracode indexes, as some names were missed or misread by the indexer. It is especially advisable for researchers to continue a search in the actual schedules even though a name fails to appear in an index.

Census records can be found at the LDS Family History Library and many genealogical libraries. In addition, Ancestry.com offers scanned images online from the 1790 U.S. Federal Census to the 1920 U.S. Federal Census. These records contain more than 450 million names and are part of Ancestry.com's Images Online initiative. Ancestry has begun an innovative project to reconstruct the vast amount of information lost when a 1921 fire destroyed nearly the entire 1890 census. The census substitute is the largest project of its kind and will fill the void that was created when the fire destroyed insight into an entire generation's family demographics, occupations and much more. Ancestry.com is using remaining fragments of the original 1890 census, 1890 special veterans schedules, several Indian tribe censuses for years surrounding 1890, state censuses (1885 or 1895), city and county directories, alumni directories and voter registration documents to construct a census substitute. More than 20 million records have been identified for inclusion in the census substitute.

Information gathered from talking with Ralph Patton in September 2002.

Lizzie Campbell never married. Ralph remembers her living with the family prior to when he moved at age 5. She was known as age 5. Ralph lived in Riverside (near Danville) until age 5 and then they moved to Watsontown.

Margaret was Marr's wife. She had a watch inscribed as C. Patton which was supposed to always stay with the oldest grandchild. As a result, I think Ralph now has the watch. This was curious because there were other great granchildren other than Ralph who possibly shoudl have received the watch.

Raymond and Marr had the same parents and had the same father as Torrence and Oakley. Thus, the two pairs were half brothers.

Raymond was quite a contrarian. He was not a fan of the war and often spoke of shooting off his own toe to get out of going to war. Eventually, they came to get him to take him to serve in the war and he eventually ended up serving and becoming a big supported of the military.

Raymond may have had a child named Chuck.

When Rose mentioned the Patton genealogy book she received, she mentioned that a lady brought it to her near the time that a reunion took place in White Deer, PA. The lady said that Ralph's children were the 9th generation to be living in the U.S. Rose thought that they were the 11th generation. Rose talked to the lady about how neat it would be to go back and research the arrivals (and whether they came over on the Mayflower or something). The lady mentioned to not look back to far as the first arrivals were probably prisoners or criminals.

According to Ralph, Torrence never spoke of his mother and Ralph had always viewed this fact as suspicious (when according to Jeanne Patton this seems even more odd since he often carried on about many topics).

It is possible that Anne (Campbell) may have spent some time in the Danville State Hospital.

Things like Alzheimer's were mentioned as a possibility for Lizzie. It may have also been mentioned related to Anne (Campbell) but I don't really know about this.
