Letter from Belle Mercer to Olin Jolls

April 21, 1940 Parts Skipped

About your Birth Certifacte; also about Leslie's; I will say smoothly and quietly: Do get busy right away: every year; even every day makes the chance of your getting witnesses less. How many people are living now that would have known your family? Who would have known the exact date of your birth? And every year a few less. Kate was born May 31, 1874: You were born Apr. 14, 1890. So she would have been 16; lacks very little But in Leslie's case she would not count. I think Elise H. (Eddy) saw enough of the family and being a close friend of Cora's would be acceptible: probably Charles also. Possibly Art Howletts or his wife; but you know neighbors usually are not very accurate remembering dates, unless their own children are nearly the same. I think possibly Dr. Howard's medial books might have been sent to Albany N.Y. for record after his death. I understand that was the case many times when the books were taken care of. Could you not get directly on that work and find out? --- Have you any papers with your age at time of entering World War? Wherever your entering (at Gowanda or other place you know) records must have been made. Also in Albany (military records) they are probably recorded. I have had some experience this last year: One record I had "was date and my age when I entered Ohio University." If you had the date you first went to school and your age at that time, that would be proof. Someone could make the copy and swear to it. Wonder where Cottage School records are? Art Howlett probably would know that? They even told me "anyone's 1st operators license would be acceptable: but who ever keeps it?" ---- Last summer I had with me a letter I wrote home when we lived in Waterford; it was after you had gone home, I think. Did I give you that letter: if I did not I will look for it. I think the letter was dated April 14 and I said "I think this is Burr's birthday." Then over at the end, I had written your name and the date Apr. 14, 1900. I probably looked the day up and then wrote it showing I had it right.

Well this is too long a letter to read it by piece meals if it takes too much time.

I hope you both keep well.

Best wishes

Aunt Belle

From the genealogy compiled by Amanda Wilcox:

The Brant Cemetery is located on New York Route 249, one-half mile East of Brant Center, Erie county, NY. It was donated by Samuel Butts and the lots were set up by George Matteson. George Matteson was born in Vermont October 21, 1790. He was the son of Francis Matteson. A private burying ground was set aside by Mr. Butts for his family and descendants which is still used today. It is located West of the main burial grounds. The cemetery is well kept but, due to age, some stones are becoming illegible and a few are broken. Located on the grounds to the rear of the tool shed is an area of unmarked graves, consisting of infants, children of farm laborers and adults who were either unidentified or could not afford the cost of a lot.

The unidentified were killed as the result of being hit by trains passing through the area. A few stones with German inscriptions have been translated into English.
