Groundhog History!

I'm a history major in college, and while looking at some general info. on this fun and up-coming Groundhog Day to show my daughter, I accidentally started wondering where the holiday came from. It turns out it goes way back and just so happens I need a research paper from the medieval times! Plus, who can resist such a furry creature! This would be for my Middle Ages/Renaissance class & on the origins of Groundhog Day...way back to Europe. Any ideas of where to start (I'll be looking myself certainly) would be greatly appreciated!
